Primary 4
As you are aware, this is a very busy year for your child, both academically and spiritually. Children will gain a multitude of opportunities to develop new skills in different areas of learning and enhance experiences already gained at Termoncanice.
Our aim is to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum culminating in the Key Stage One Assessment at the end of the year in both Numeracy and Literacy. You can work alongside your child to develop these core subjects through the PIN Maths club and Accelerated Reading. Homework is designed to reinforce what is taught in the classroom therefore you are aware of what your child is learning and can support them in their efforts.
Throughout the year children will have many opportunities to perform to an audience, thus developing their confidence. Examples include class assemblies, school shows, poetry performances, reading at mass and performing locally. Sporting activities include swimming confidence sessions, IFA coaching, weekly PE sessions and preparation for Sports Day.
Termoncanice is advanced in the use of learning through digital media. Children in Primary 4 are exposed to ICT in classrooms on a daily basis alongside regular use of the iMac suite, computer suite and individual teacher sets of iPads, which not only enhance teaching but develop children's creativity and group work skills.
Primary 4 is obviously an important year for the Children's religious development with First Confession in March, followed by First Communion in May. (See timetable for exact dates). In helping your child prepare for this, you are offered a pre-sacramental course for each individual celebration. Children will be taught the relevant prayers in class. These are located in the School Prayer Book which is sent home. Children will also complete their 'Celebrate' book which will be sent home at the end of the year.
Alongside a homework club, Primary 4 children are also offered a variety of after school clubs including dance, fit families, gaelic and judo etc.
Primary 4 children will also play an important role in the Eco-Schools initiative through environmental issues and maintaining our coveted Green Flag Award.
As teachers of your children, our overall aim is to create a learning environment in which your child feels happy, valued and safe, where they can achieve their full potential!
